If I could
Poem by Rayni Joan
I could eat a whole cake
For Pete’s sake
My husband could eat a whole cow
Right now
But this overindulgence
Creates such bulgence
Not fun
when it’s done
So I restrain, avoid gain, also pleasure and pain.
Okay, I know, a body’s a go
When making love or thinking of
The choice to exercise the voice
To read poetry, to hug a tree
But it feels kinda shoddy to have a body
When you gotta go and there’s no pottie
Or you’re sick, in pain, with scattered brain
Insane with such a sprain, you gotta abstain
If I could choose to reinvent
I’d let myself be heaven-sent
I’d look forward by far
To being a star
Not on screen
Or in a magazine
I mean a star in the sky
Up above the world so high
Can a star have a scar?
If you twinkle, can you wrinkle?
Can you fight if you’re just light?
Do you feel old or cold
If you’re pure shimmering gold?
Do you worry about running out of ova
When you’re a supernova?
Yes, if I could choose to reinvent
I’d let myself be heaven-sent.
